Design of lamp reflector used in edgelight-type backlight

Purpose To maximize light input into the light guide plate
  • Overview of a edgelight-type backlight with CCFL Overview of a edgelight-type backlight with a CCFL

A cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) is attached to one side of the light guide plate (LGP). Several optical films exist above the top face of the LGP.
  • Close view of the CCFL and the lamp reflector Close view of a CCFL and a lamp reflector

The CCFL is covered with a rounded reflector to direct the emitting light toward the side face of the LGP.
  • Initial shape of the lamp reflector and the illuminance distribution Initial shape of the reflector and the illuminance distribution

(upper) A small gap exists between the lamp and the side face of the LGP.
(lower) The level of the illuminance is presented as a 2D grayscale image and graph.
  • Final shape of the lamp reflector and the illuminance distribution Final shape of the reflector and the illuminance distribution

(upper) Reflector curvature has become bigger. The position of the lamps is changed as well.
(lower) Higher illuminance is achieved on the side face where emitted light enters into the LGP.
